13th International Congress of APPPAH in Los Angeles February 21 - 26, 2007
Birth & the Human Family: Embracing the Power of Prenatal Life
|
Cinema Recognition Award
APPPAH’s 2007 Congress will kick off its opening night in fine style with its second APPPAH Achievement in Film gala.
This year we honor Tsotsi, a beautiful film that dramatizes important issues in the field of prenatal and perinatal psychology and health, such as the redemptive nature of parent-child relationships and the transformational power of love. Tsotsi won the Academy Award in 2005 for Best Foreign Film (South Africa.)
For the panel discussion following the film screening, event chairs Marcy Axness and Thomas Verny are honored to welcome panelist Sue Kiel. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, and raised during the most brutal years of Apartheid, Sue was a founding member of Market Theater, one of South Africa’s first multi-racial theaters. Now a Los Angeleno, Sue is delighted to join our discussion of this movie that has been deeply on her mind, as she is developing a one-woman show dealing with growing up white in South Africa. Together we will explore the film’s powerful layering of themes so culturally familiar to her, of poverty, violence, race, and the human struggle. Sue’s close ties to the South African film and theater culture may result in other surprise panel guests as well--come and find out!!
Like the film evening in 2005, this promises to be a very special way to begin our international gathering. Please come, relax, learn, enjoy and participate. And all for free. (Please complete the online registration form to reserve seats.) --Marcy Axness, PhD, and Thomas R. Verny, MD, Film Award Committee Chairs.
