Congress of APPPAH 2001

OPENING NIGHT

Congress Purpose and Overview
by Marti Glenn, Ph.D., Congress Chairperson

Marti welcomed the group and acknowledged the help of the Board of Directors and the members of the Executive Steering Committee including William Emerson, Ph.D., Barbara Findeisen MFT, and Maureen Wolfe, CNM. in the organization of the 10th International Congress of APPPAH. She reminded us that since the first congress in Toronto in 1983 we have observed many positive changes in birth procedures and practices. This Congress follows the 1999 Millennium Congress on "Birth and Consciousness" and explores the theme "Birth: The Genesis of Health." Portions of her remarks follows.

Leading-edge research in medicine and psychology reveals that our earliest experiences of life profoundly shape the blueprint of our being-genetically, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. The growing depth and breadth of research, clinical experience and reported life experiences show us the pervasive impact of the prenatal and perinatal period. Science now recognizes that the conditions in which we develop in the womb profoundly influence our susceptibility to coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity in later life. Behavioral dysfunctions have also been linked to environmental influences in our earliest development. Conception, life in the womb, birth and bonding shape our sense of self and our lifelong experiences. This knowledge provides us with many challenges and much hope. It is from this place of possibility that we launch this landmark event, APPPAH's 10th International Congress.

At this Congress, lively debates and forums led by psychologists, scientists, philosophers and clinicians explore research and perspectives on blending the miracle of the human spirit with the miracles of modern medicine. These leading-edge scholars and practitioners inspire us with their visionary work and challenge us to explore new alternatives. Here we find forums in which to share our experiences, delve into critical issues and ask important questions. In small groups organized around special interests, we will network, share ideas, visions and possibilities with colleagues. Our hope is that you leave the congress informed and inspired.
