Mindfulness and Perinatal Health: Waking Up to the Somatic Experiences of Pregnancy and Childbirth

Time:
Fri, 11/15/2013 - 14:00 to 15:30
Mindfulness expert Jon Kabat-Zinn wrote in Coming to Our Senses that “the journey toward health and sanity is nothing less than an invitation to wake up to the fullness of our lives as if they actually mattered.” This fullness is present all the time—including during childbirth. Yet the full experience of childbirth is often eclipsed by fear, anxiety or a medical system that alienates women and families. How can mindfulness help us experience the fullness of pregnancy and birth? This session will present a review of mindfulness as a tool for coping and healing before, during and after childbirth and suggest new directions for research in the field. It will include an overview of key studies that support mindfulness as an intervention for coping with pain and fear and information about the role of mindfulness in body awareness. Participants will be led in guided mindfulness exercises that can be used in the context of childbirth and parenting.
