Why a program for educators in pre- and perinatal psychology?

Pre-  and perinatal issues must be well explained in order for professionals to have the tools needed to help mothers, fathers and couples become aware of the dynamic changes in focus concerning babies and the future of humanity.  New technology and a newly emerging emphasis on neuroscience and epigenetics has awakened an interest in knowing more about human development.  Science has now proven that the period of time from before conception and through pregnancy, birth and early parenting, lays the blueprint upon which that human being will experience health and emotionally act out his/her life.  Members of APPPAH have been studying prenatal awareness for over 30 years.  A wealth of information may be found in our professional journals and on our website.  Members have become very aware of the impact of pre- and perinatal issues through studying the way human beings live their lives.  Today as Dr. David Chamberlain (2013), a famous psychotherapist states,  "I am especially aware of the need to create babies that are mentally and physically healthy in order to have a world that is healthy and peaceful" (Windows to the Womb). All professionals and para-professionals working with expectant parents need to understand some of the research APPPAH has gathered and its positive application to life.  Studying the this curriculum will give you this basic knowledge. This course will prepare you well.

What is Touch the Future Academy?

APPPAH is pleased to announce a nonprofit, educational partnership with The Academy(link is external), a new outreach project created by Touch The Future.  The Academy's resources are featured in APPPAH's new Classwomb, a Pre-Natal and Peri-Natal Educator (PPNE) Certificate Program

This rare and valuable resource for birth and postpartum professionals is a unique, dynamic platform that instantly filters and sorts hundreds of hours of in-depth personal interview focusing in on the themes and issues that are most important to professional education and presentation tools.  APPPAH’s 11 module program already features films from this great collection. Now educators will have access to hundreds more films along with insights and resources.  You will be able to search by author, presenter or theme in the collection at the Academy.  For more information, see https://ttfuture.org/academy/introduction.

Your purchase of the Full Course or your first module will give access to the Academy.

What is involved in having a mentor?

You have the option of choosing a mentor. Once you register, the administrator will ask you if you want to choose one; it is an option not required.  Your student questionnaire will help the mentor more fully meet your needs.  It will be forwarded to the mentor after you have selected him or her. The mentors are trained PPN professionals or graudates of the program who can be available on an on-call basis. They can provide regular contact with you via email, telephone or skype. You can work out with your mentor what your level of support needs to be, and this may change and evolve over time.  Benefits of choosing a mentor are:

  • Guidance during difficult times
  • Increased comprehension of the material
  • Expertise in PPN
  • Reflection for greater integration of the material

Can I study at my own pace and is there ever an expiration date?

Yes, you can study at your own pace because this is all online and you will have a mentor to work with.  The time limit is 2 years to complete the course.

How do I access course materials?

All material will be online at http://classroom.birthpsychology.com.  You will need a username and password that is separate from the birthpsychology.com website.  There are free offerings, you can try out a module there now if you wish.  With your student membership in APPPAH you will have access to MP3 files off the APPPAH website.  You will be led to Youtube videos and other videos scheduled on the syllabus.  Books can be ordered through Amazon.com or other bookstores.  Students may borrow books from friends and often libraries.

Will there be forums so I can ask questions and get support?

Yes, there are forums for each module and you will always have access to your mentor via email.  We offer student check-ins via telconference technology via telephone and via computer.  The calls are on the last Monday of the month.

There is also a place in the classroom called Study Groups where there are chat rooms and forums by topic.  As you student you can ask for topic to be placed there if you wish.  You can make the program more dynamic.  We invite your input.

Our community meets in Facebook, too, in a closed group page for students of the certificate program.

What are the videos we can watch, and may I use them for my own educational purposes?

These are videos from Touch the Future on Birth and Bonding and are available through the classroom website.

How am I evaluated during the program?

At the end of every module you will have core competency test questions so you can evaluate yourself concerning how you think you have absorbed the material from that area.  There is also an essay question at the end of each module so you can write and integrate your materials.  Remember that you will also have a personal mentor that you can consult with and you will have access to the chat rooms and forums.  Also during the study period you will have opportunity to attend local workshops focusing on the certificate training material where you will be able to discuss and learn from mentors concerning your questions.  APPPAH is very interested in getting the information about pre and perinatal psychology out to parents and so every effort will be made to help students succeed in this training.

Is there a final exam?
