APPPAH Live: Black Heartbeat Series 2022: Black Doulas: Heal the Black Maternal Health Crisis with Angie West-Robinson, CBE, CD

Black Doulas: A Holistic Approach to Heal the Black Maternal Health Crisis
“Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women.” ~Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
This horrific statistic released in April 2022, has unfortunately been the reality for women of color for decades. What factors contribute to this data? How does the birth experience of non-melanated women differ from women of color? What efforts have been executed to mend this issue? Birth is a unique process that should not be treated as a disease or illness– it is a beautiful journey that requires a spectrum of expertise, education, and support. This presentation seeks to address critical issues surrounding the state of Black Maternal Health and how the role of the Black Doula along with holistic measures, can save black and brown women during the pregnancy and labor experience.
