Monday LIVE: Exploring Birth Psychology- Fathers Make a World of Difference with Patrick Houser

September 13 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM EDT

Fathers Make a World of Difference

Knowledge plus love equals wisdom. So let’s see if we can gain some wisdom together that we can apply to one of the greatest mysteries we will ever experience, birth. The primal time (conception to +-2 years old) is significant in the life of a mother, a father, a child and the family. I view birth as the ‘birth’ of all 4 of these elements and a time of much needed support for all.

Fathers-to-Be Precepts:

  • During birth mothers are having a deep physical and most often emotional experience
  • Fathers are having a less visible experience…YET one that deserves to be acknowledged and supported and we will explore some of these elements and why
  • Most men do not have a clue they are going to have an emotional experience yet virtually all do. Fathers’ needs and roles are often undermined or ignored in childbirth education and society as a whole
  • For the majority of mothers an important ingredient for the success of her pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding is the care provided by the father.
  • Fathers are typically an underutilized resource during birth and the breastfeeding time
  • Fathers must feel welcome, that they belong, and that they are valuable and know what their role is, in order to begin the bonding process and secure the future of the family

*APPPAH recognizes that not all birthing people and parents identify as mothers or fathers. Our intention is to be inclusive of all genders, non-binary and other-gendered pregnant people, birthing people partners and parents.  Although some people may find comfort in the use of these traditional terms, we know that for some they may cause discomfort or pain, please accept our apologies as we work toward finding the right balance ourselves, with our speakers and with the communities we serve.  We are actively seeking speaker(s) who can help bring greater awareness about gender issues in the PPN world. Please contact Catherine at [email protected] if you have any speaker suggestions.

Patrick Houser

Patrick M. Houser is a father and a grandfather. In 1980 Patrick ‘designed’ and ‘fathered’ the first documented waterbirth in the USA. This birth of his second son was the result of his 3 year enquiry into birth and birth psychology stimulated by his first son’s traumatic arrival. There had to be a connection between who we are, how we got this way, and how to give birth and receive our children and families in a more conscious way.

In 1998 Mr. Houser relocated from the USA to the UK. In July 2006 he and his colleague Elmer Postle, began Fathers-To-Be (F2B). F2B is an initiative supporting education, understanding and engagement in fatherhood and family. They provided classes and coaching for expectant and new dads and consulted with health service providers toward their better understanding and more successful support of fathers in their various programs. Patrick has also run workshops for birth professionals and parents in many countries and in 2014 moved back to Austin, Texas.
