Dear PPPANA Member:

A great deal has happened since I wrote to you in January of this year. First of all, I want to share with you the excitement and promise of the Planning Meeting which was held at the beginning of July at Amherst, MA, the site of the Fourth Congress. After a tour of the facilities, all 42 attendees settled down to the serious business of planning the Congress. We discussed, planned, committed ourselves and moved from being a group of strangers to a team of colleagues. It was an highly satisfying meeting although it is certainly clear to all of those who were present what a huge task faces us if we are to bring the meeting to a successful reality.

One of the first tasks facing us is financial. We must raise the operating capital for this Congress from the energy, good will and commitment of ourselves alone. We have applied for corporate funding: this is not a reality at this point. Realizing this, and looking, too, at our other needs, I have some proposals to make to you as a member of the community who are concerned with pre and perinatal psychology and practices:

First of all, let me ask you to invest in the Congress by reserving a place there now. Early registration is a very important way in which we can raise vitally needed funds. In addition, early registration assures you of a place at the Congress at very favorable rates. If your preregistration is postmarked by September 1, 1988 you will be able to register at a rate which is not only a substantial reduction from the later cost of on-site tuition, you will also save the entire cost of the food plan, (expected to run about $100.00). So registration now will save a substantial amount of money and help the Congress in a vital area.

Second, please consider making a loan or donation to the Fourth Congress. PPPANA is non-profit organization and your donations to it are therefore fully tax-deductible. Donations will be gratefully accepted and will be acknowledged, if you desire, in the official Congress literature. Loans, on the other hand, will be repaid from the proceeds of the Congress. All three previous Congresses have repaid their debts in full and we anticipate being able to follow suit. In the event that the Congress fails to make enough money to pay its debts, then the loans would become tax deductible donations to PPPANA. It is, however, our intention to repay all debts in full.

Third, please share your mailing lists with us. Many of you have developed mailing lists which are rich in professionals, parents, families, institutions and so forth who would be interested in PPPANA and might become attendees, exhibitors, speakers or corporate sponsors of the Fourth Congress. This will make PPPANA and the Congress more widely known, more effective and more able to support your needs in your professional, personal and geographic communities. It also saves PPPANA from the expenses involved in buying mailing lists. This can be a sizeable expense and the returns are often slim.

Fourth, share your communities with PPPANA and the Congress. Let us know if you are aware of foundations or companies which would be potentially interested in funding the Congress. Share the Congress material with friends and colleagues, post them on bulletin boards, give them to the editors of newsletters from hospitals, organizations and so forth. Give them to obstetricians, pediatricians, nurses, midwives, therapists, etc. We need your active participation in this area so we can speak to the many people who need to hear our voice.

Fifth, give us your children! Because we believe in the importance of what our children learn and experience while we, too, are learning and experiencing, the Fourth Congress will have a Children's Congress component as carefully programmed and constructed as the adult Congress. We will have an extraordinary experience available for children of school age (K-12) led by an exceptionally gifted professional recreation leader and integrating the ideas, concepts and interests of the Congress. The high point of the Closing Ceremonies will be a contribution forged from the skills and interests of the Children and their leaders so that we may all share together in the creation of a community which spans generation lines. But the Children's Congress cannot occur without adequate pre-registration. We are asking you to pre-register your children with a $25.00 deposit for the first child and $15.00 per child for other children in the same family. Space will be limited and pre-registered children will have priority. Deposits will be refundable in full until July 15, 1989.

Sixth, give us your enthusiasm. I have asked for your money, your wisdom and your children. Now let me ask for you! Tell us how PPPANA and the Congress can be of most interest and benefit to you. Volunteer at the Congress for a work-scholarship or otherwise. But join those of us working to make this Congress an electrifying experience which will provide thought-provoking and stimulating ideas, moving and important experiences, shared and joyous community building and fun, too.

I am looking forward to seeing you at Amherst!

Prenatally yours,
