Many members of the APPPAH family will be saddened to learn of the passing of noted neonatologist, colleague, and friend, Frederick Wirth, who died in October at the age of 68. Fred was elected to the APPPAH Board in 2005 but shortly afterward was stricken with pancreatic cancer and was never able to serve. In his long career, he cared for over 10,000 babies, held important positions in medical faculties and hospitals, published 38 scientific papers, served on several federal advisory boards, and was the physician to America's first test-tube baby, born in 1981. In the last decade of his life, Fred's favorite activity was writing the extraordinary book Prenatal Parenting: The Complete Psychological and Spiritual Guide to Loving Your Unborn Child (HarperCollins, 2001), creating the Institute for Perinatal Education, and training people to lead prenatal parenting groups all across America.
