Experiences of Social Isolation for First-Time Mothers with Pre-existing Anxiety During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Interpretative Phenomenological Approach

Author(s): Dr. Jessica Haselhurst.

This study aimed to explore experiences of social isolation for first-time UK
mothers with pre-existing anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Six interviews were
completed between July-November 2021. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis
revealed four superordinate and twelve subordinate themes reflecting experiences of new
motherhood and social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and their influence on
mental health, coping and accessing support. Findings contribute to the understanding of
the experiences of this population during/beyond pandemic restrictions, with implications
for how gestational parents are supported in the aftermath of the pandemic and similar
future crises.
