APPPAH Live: Exploring Birth Psychology- Benevolent Childhood Experiences with Angela Narayan, PhD

June 13 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs)

Assessing Parents’ Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs) during the Perinatal Period as a Counterpart to Childhood Adversity and a Strategy to Promote Resilience Across Generations

This presentation will focus on providing an overview of the Benevolent Childhood Experiences (BCEs) scale as a research and clinical tool to assess positive childhood experiences as promotive and protective factors in adults and parents with histories of childhood adversity. Presentation content will focus on how to use the BCEs scale as a counterpart to the well-known ACEs scale to leverage resilience processes in diverse and marginalized families, including pregnant individuals and partners, to promote wellbeing across generations.

Angela Narayan, PhD

Dr. Angela Narayan is an assistant professor in the clinical child psychology Ph.D. program in the Department of Psychology at the University of Denver (DU). She received her Ph.D. in clinical child psychology from the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota with Dr. Ann Masten as her predoctoral mentor. She then completed a predoctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry and Child Trauma Research Program at the University of California, San Francisco with Dr. Alicia Lieberman as her postdoctoral mentor. She is particularly interested in promoting resilience during the perinatal, infancy, and early childhood periods with concrete tools to leverage underserved and marginalized families’ strengths, resources, and positive coping strategies. Dr. Narayan is also interested in how the early experiences of diverse mothers and fathers shape their parenting in the next generation. Dr. Narayan is a licensed clinical psychologist in Colorado.
